Local community group, Parramatta Climate Action Network went to work on Saturday building a huge sign spelling out the words “big solar”, to show their support for the development of large scale solar power in Australia.
A group of ParraCAN members and the public gathered at the Town Hall with overalls, hardhats and tools to build the big solar sign. They are calling on Parramatta Federal MP Julie Owens and state MP Geoff Lee to get behind the $10 billion fund for renewable energy.
“Australia is the sunniest country on earth, so it just makes sense that we start using this vast resource to provide us with large amounts of clean, renewable electricity,” said Annie Nielsen spokesperson for ParraCAN.
“Solar energy can bring thousands of new green jobs and investment to Western Sydney.
“And with the cost of coal and gas going up each year – and renewable energy getting cheaper – investing in solar will help manage rising energy prices”.
“We are asking our MP, Julie Owens and state MP Geoff Lee why are people in Parramatta paying more and more for polluting fossil fuels when we could power ourselves with the sun, which is a free, clean source of fuel that will never run out."
The group is calling on their local state and federal MPs to support clean renewable energy using the $10 billion clean energy fund, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, that should fund big solar projects across Australia. This fund was established by the Gillard Government and the Greens in 2011 and should be used to build large scale renewable energy.
