Parramatta Says Yes to a Price on Pollution and to Renewable Energy

Federal Member for Parramatta, Julie Owens, today met with local environmental action group Parramatta Climate Action Network (ParraCAN)

ParraCAN, which has won an award for its work, recently conducted a survey in Parramatta to gauge local support for action on climate change.

"I congratulate ParraCAN on its initiative in surveying residents in six suburbs in my Parramatta electorate about climate change,” Ms Owens said.

Four members of the network met with Ms Owens to discuss the outcomes of the survey involving hundreds of households, as part of a national survey of more than 10,000 homes

The results showed that:

87 per cent agreed that 'Australia should put a price tag on pollution, so that businesses that continue to pollute are made responsible and those that don't pollute have an incentive to use clean energy';

89 per cent agreed that 'the Australian government should develop a plan to move to 100 per cent renewable energy' (like wind and solar); and 89 per cent agreed that 'the government should implement strong policy to support new jobs and investment in renewable energy'.

"The Climate Commission recently reported that the global climate is warming and human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, are almost surely the primary cause. Furthermore, its report said this decade is critical and, unless effective action is taken now, the global climate may be irreversibly altered.

"This is why I strongly support saying YES to putting a price on pollution, and to a cleaner Australia, and work towards a 100 per cent renewable energy future," Ms Owens said.
