Hi all,
Well by now you'll have seen the big announcement about the carbon price and big win for renewable energy contained within the package!
Today, thanks to the tireless work of so many people in local communities across the country - together with other organisations in the movement - we have won a fantastic outcome for renewable energy.
There is new money, new independent bodies and planning towards 100% renewable energy! In particular we are excited about:
A new independent Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to administer $3.7billion of existing renewables programs
A Clean Energy Finance Corporation with $10billion over 5 years, with 50% of that quarantined for renewables only
The Australian Energy Regulator to develop a plan for how the grid can deliver 100% renewable energy!
So it's been an good day for renewable energy supporters all round!
In keeping with the action-oriented nature of our campaign - and because the opposition, polluters and co have already gone out fighting against these measures - we now need to make sure we respond with a big show of support!
The most important thing you can do now is help show a strong positive community response to this announcement. Here are some ideas for what you can do:
1. Write a letter the editor of the paper or call talkback showing your support for this renewable energy measure. See the email and phone contacts and talking points here: http://100percent.org.au/content/rapid-response-carbon-price
2. Write an email to your local politician to share your support for the renewable energy announcements. See here for email addresses and ideas for what you might say: http://100percent.org.au/content/emailing-your-mp-support-renewable-energy
3. Post a message on facebook showing your support for the renewable energy package. Yeeha!
And if you're in a local community group you can find an action kit to help you with your local response here: http://100percent.org.au/content/carbon-price-response-action-kit
Once again a big congratulations to everyone who called, emailed, petitioned, local media-ed and all the rest over the past few months - a win like this simply would not have happened without a huge effort and much pressure from many thousands of people in local communities across the country.
Of course we know that we've still got a long way to go to get to a truly low carbon 100% renewable energy powered future - and we'll need to work hard over the next four months to make sure the new measure get into legisatltion but today we've made a good step towards that, so please take a moment to pat yourself on the back (or perhaps even pop a bottle of bubbly this evening to celebrate the win like my lovely housemates are doing with me!)
We'll be back in touch with further info on next steps for the coming months very shortly.
Cheers,
Lindsay
for the whole 100% Renewable campaign team
