Methane emissions from Natural Gas fields, and from shale fracking, means the use of these fuels has not yet be proven to be climate safer than coal.
A study reported by Nature, found up to 9% leakage rates measured. However a more comprehensive study across geographic industry regions, is needed for a clear statistical picture. The gas industry admits there are opportunities to limit emissions.
The great "transition fuel", promising by sanctioned carbon accounting methods to be cleaner than coal in the burning, could well be dirtier in extraction and delivery.

Bang, there goes mankind's climate savior number one.
That only leaves the unrealized hope of carbon capture and storage, for current Australian Government policy of picking losers.
Of course there is also renewable energy, particularly established technologies of wind and solar, but our coal mafia minded government appears to want as little of this as possible
The sad part is that the "clean" gas as savior has been promulgated without comprehensive independent studies to back up the claim, when looking at leakage emissions and the energy return on fossil fuel energy invested.
