Annual General Meeting 29th March 2009
We held the ParraCAN AGM in Parramatta Park - near the Kiosk. After a quick and efficient formal meeting we spent the rest of our time planting trees (sedge, actually, to help protect against erosion of the river bank) along the western bank of the river, and followed this with another delicious lunch.
This was ParraCAN'S first AGM. The Acting Chair's report can be viewed here

Earth Hour Fund Raising Dinner 28th March
Some 30 people enjoyed a wonderful vegetarian meal at ParraCAN's fundraiser dinner on 28 March in the the Tian Ci Restaurant at 1006 Victoria Road West Ryde. We were part of the growing success of Earth Hour - which is helping to establish climate change awareness and action around the world.
Carbon Polution Reduction Scheme - taking action
On 27th March ParraCAN coordinated a day of direct action at the office of Julie Owens (Federal Member for Parramatta). It is clear that there is still a lack of urgency in the public mind and much more needs to be done.
Julie Owens spoke at some length with ParraCAN about the Government's actions to date and what else it is planning.
ParraCAN higlighted the deficiencies with the Government's proposed 'Carbon Pollution Reuduction Scheme (CPRS) - especially the potential for it to undercut the actions that individuals, families and communities are making to reduce their 'carbon footprints' . We emphasised the need for urgent and major action and the need for a successful global response at the upcoming International Conference in Copenhagen (December).
This day of action will be reported in the local press.
Ring-around-Parliament: 3 February
Delegates - joined by 2000 plus people formed a ring around Parliament (2.5 km!) to drive home to the Government the need for urgent action. Footage of this historic, but peaceful action, has been included in a number of national and state media
Climate Change Summit: 30 January to 2 February
ParraCAN was represented at the National Climate Change Summit by Tom and Ling Halbert, and Annie Nielsen - who joined over 400 other delegates from 140 grassroots climate action groups for a very productive conference.
Parramatta Council - 13 September 2008 - Outcomes
We are surveyed all 53 candidates prior to the recent Local Government Electionsfor Parramatta.
The results of the survey follow. In summary there was a modest, but very 'climate change action positive' response to our survey.
ParraCAN is following up elected candidates to work with them in turning sentiment into action...
Two winners for the mural competition have been selected.
ParraCAN attended the EarthCare Fair at the Richmond Campus of UWS. The Mural Compeitition we held attracted these fine entries by youngsters who expressed their feelings about climate change.

A recent Statewide Conference (4 and 5 October) of the group was very successful and produced a good strategic plan. ParraCAN will be closely involved in helping to make it happen.
We will publish details as we swing into action

ParraCAN make a difference on climate change
Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge facing our planet and the good news is that we can do something about it and a new group is forming in the Parramatta region to show people how. But first they need your help to create a unique logo for the group to help spread the word.
ParraCAN was formed by local community members concerned about the impacts of climate change and who were determined to take action. Their aim is to make the Parramatta region more climate friendly and help individuals, business and government to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
ParraCAN is running a logo competition to find the perfect logo for the new group and you are invited to participate. Entries are invited for a logo that reflects the urgent need to take action on climate change and encourage people to do so in the Parramatta region.
The winner will get to see their logo become the face of climate change action in Parramatta and will receive a fantastic climate friendly prize.

This is a ParraCAN fund raising event
Thanks to everyone who attended the ParraCAN launch on Monday 3 September 2007. It was fantastic to see so many people so committed to taking action on climate change getting together.
Presenter Dr Michael Tse
The launch featured a presentation by Al Gore trained speaker, Dr Michael Tse on 'An Inconvenient Truth' that is climate change. Dr Tse shared some startling facts.
For example, did you know the number of extreme fire danger days is likely to increase by up to 25% But there is some good news. According to Dr Tse, - 80% of Australians support laws to reduce greenhouse pollution - 92% want action on climate change - Climate change will have no negative impact on the Australian economy.
It's now up to us to take action and stop the threat of climate change! One of the main aims of our launch was to find out where you thought ParraCAN should be focussing our attention. Here's what you told us. The highest priority for ParraCAN should be:
- publicise/promote ParraCAN
- empower people to act - convince government to act
- inform and involve the local community
The most important 'message' is:
- act now - take personal responsibility -
- as individuals there are many things we can do.
All participants were asked to develop a personal action plan to reduce their own impacts on climate change.
Some of the most popular actions were:
- use the car less
- speak up at every opportunity and tell others how to get involved
- use renewable energy - save water
- join ParraCAN
Just some of the people attending the launch
Congratulations to the winner of our lucky door prize, Lindsay Janes and thank you to J B Hi Fi Parramatta for donating the prize - a copy of Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth'
